What is a Transmission? How to Perform Transmission Maintenance?
What is the transmission, one of the important parts of your vehicle? What is the function of the transmission in the vehicle? How to maintain transmission? How many types of transmissions are there?
What is a Transmission?
The transmission, which is one of the vital parts of your vehicles, is the mechanism that transmits the movement received from the engine, as well as the torque value, to the shaft and differential, which are the power transmission organs. In summary, the transmission is the set of gears required to move the car at the desired speed.
What is the Function of the Transmission in a Vehicle?
It is thanks to the transmission that your vehicle stays running while stationary.
The transmission adjusts the required gear ratios between the engine and wheels according to the speed of your vehicle.
Economical driving even at high speeds is the duty of the transmission with appropriate gear selection.
When you need to reverse your vehicle, you do this through the transmission.
With the clutch system activated, the transmission reduces the load on the vehicle engine. When you press the clutch pedal, the power between the engine power and the wheels is cut off.
Avoiding the speed range that is considered dangerous for the engine and using the engine efficiently is achieved through the transmission system.
Taking the vehicle out of park and moving it in a controlled manner on slopes and ramps is done through the transmission.
What Causes a Defective Transmission?
A faulty or inadequate transmission may cause your vehicle to stop suddenly.
Especially in heavy traffic, frequent stops may occur.
It may cause more load on the engine to reach the required speed.
How to maintain transmission?
The essential thing in transmission maintenance is oil leakage control. Checking for oil leaks during periodic maintenance can protect you from possible major malfunctions.
Transmission oil should be changed every 40 thousand kilometers with the brand and quantity recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicle. Possible oil leaks should be attended to immediately by an authorized and specialized service.
In addition, important transmission system parts of your vehicle that need to be checked and replaced are concept parts. These parts, known as pressure linings or clutch linings, must be replaced when their useful life expires.
How Many Types of Transmission Are There?
There are basically two types of transmissions. There are also subgroup types of transmission types, which are divided into automatic transmission and manual transmission.
What is a Manual Transmission?
If the gear shifts of the transmission system, which we explained above and its functions, are controlled directly by the driver, this is a manual transmission system.
What are Manual Transmission Parts?
Clutch pedal
The clutch pedal, which is one of the parts of the transmission system that extends into the vehicle, puts pressure on the diaphragm to which it is connected and loosens the pressure plate when you press on it. In this way, the connection with the concept is lost. When you take your foot off the clutch pedal, the pressure plate sits and the clutch is activated. It mostly works with a hydraulic system; But there are also clutch pedals with cable connection.
Clutch
The part that transfers engine torque to the transmission and your driving is called the clutch. The clutch consists of several parts. These; pressure plate, diaphragm spring, clutch disc, clutch bearing and other connecting bolts. The clutch assembly, which serves as a friction tool, is between the clutch disc, flywheel and pressure plate.
ruffle
The flywheel, located at the exit of the crankshaft, distributes the high torque created during the explosion phase of four-stroke engines equally throughout all times and provides a more stable ride. The flywheel transfers engine torque to the clutch disc.
Bracelet
These are the main parts located in the position where the gear change occurs. The rings slide between the teeth and engage with the gears. The ring connected to the specified gear transfers the engine torque from the intermediate shaft to the output shaft.
Clutch Fork
The clutch fork, which performs the task of moving the rings on the output shaft, moves during the gear engagement in order to select the appropriate gear.
Synchromesh
Synchronizers are located between the gear and the ring. It enables the rings to engage with the gears even if there is a speed difference between the gear and the ring. Thus, there is a smooth transition even at different speeds.
Get a thousand now
It is the shaft to which the engine power is transferred, connected to the shaft coming out of the engine. The gears here are directly connected to the shaft and the movement is transferred by connecting with the gears on the output shaft.
Output Shaft
They do not rotate with the intermediate shaft without shifting gears. Unlike the intermediate shaft, the gears on the output shaft are connected to the shaft with bearings. The gear can rotate freely, independent of the shaft. When the appropriate gear is engaged, the movement between the gears is transferred to this shaft, providing speed and torque at the specified gear ratio.
Threaded
Large gears provide more torque and lower speed, while small gears provide lower torque and higher speed. The size and ratio of the gear determine the torque and speed output.
What is Automatic Transmission?
It is a transmission system in which gear shifts are not made by the drivers, there is no clutch pedal, and gear shifts are made by the transmission control unit in accordance with the driving conditions.
What are the Automatic Transmission Types?
Fully Automatic Transmission Types
– Classic Fully Automatic Transmissions:
It consists of basic parts such as electrovalve group, hydraulic unit, oil pump and gear system. The transmission control unit (ecu) manages the operation of the transmission. In this automatic transmission system, called the real fully automatic transmission system, while the most ideal automatic transmission comfort is achieved, fuel consumption increases in direct proportion. Gear changes are created by stopping the gears in the planetary gear sets and engaging each other. There are positions on the gear lever such as P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Driving), S (Sport), L (Low), D2 (Rapid Drive), D3 (Rapid Drive).
– CVT Automatic Transmission
In a CVT transmission, the gear can change continuously, not at a certain stage. The reason why they are considered the most ideal and most efficient transmission system for internal combustion engines is that they can offer infinite gear levels. It is possible to create gear levels in the control unit via software. CVT transmissions are known as Japanese transmissions.
Semi-Automatic Transmission Types
– Single Clutch Semi-Automatic Transmissions
It is a type of transmission in which electromechanical or electrohydraulic systems undertake the task of shifting gears and pressing the clutch. The gear structure of the transmission, shift gears and synchronizers are completely the same as the manual transmission. Driving comfort is lower, gear shifts are felt and cannot offer the comfort of fully automatic or CVT transmissions. This type of pressure-lining is also available. It can be said that it is obtained as a result of the roboticization of the manual transmission.
– Double Clutch Semi-Automatic Transmissions
It has double input shaft and double pressure pads. Although it is structurally similar to a manual transmission, it is more comfortable than single-clutch semi-automatic transmissions. Of course, it cannot be expected to offer the comfort of a fully automatic or CVT transmission. Shifts are felt, although less than with single clutches. The automatic transmission type with the least fuel consumption is the double clutch semi-automatic transmission. It is frequently used in diesel vehicles.
What is Tiptronic?
Automatic transmission types where upshifting and downshifting can be done with the paddles on the steering wheel or by moving the gear lever back and forth are called tiptronic transmission. Tiptronic transmission can be semi-automatic or fully automatic.
